The Top Release of 2025: Rosalía's Lux Takes the Number One Position.

Initially, this work could seem more like a difficult university quiz than a new popular music album from an artist who just had a previous single was a collaboration with an international K-pop icon. Divided across four separate parts and performed in 13 tongues, it is a dizzying orchestral-influenced opus that delves into female mystery, spiritual ascent, and physical transformation, often by way of the lens of different female saints. The dissolution of a romance—a topic treated with grounded honesty on another major 2025 album—soars heavenward here, carried by the constant sound of a major orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning composer within an extensive list of contributors. The pure audacity by itself renders the work of contemporary pop stars look rather modest.

Rising Above Scholarly Pretense

The fact that Lux manages to escape overly intellectual chin-stroking is nearly a miracle, with full praise going to the artist. Although this is not the first time album to fuse historical sounds with modern styles, its scale are far higher on Lux, and the tightrope walk more dramatic. What really elevates this fourth album, outside of its complex tunes, dense arrangements, and inherent theatricality, is an essential spirit of fun. Much like the iconic Björk at her height, you find a captivating quality to the vocalist's voice which sweeps you into its tornado. When she is tearing your heart apart, you nevertheless desire to be right there for the journey.

A Prime Moment of Exuberance

This exuberant spirit shines brightly on the stunning Italian song inspired by Saint Clare. It bathes in a sorrowful whirlpool for more than four moments. Then, everything drops away, to reveal we hear a spontaneous giggle and a comment before a comically over-the-top string crescendo thuds down with comedic impact. The song then segues into the wild track featuring galloping strings, a powerful choir, and a cameo appearance from none other than Björk.

"The magic with this album lies in you rarely exactly know—or even wish to know—what you will go next."

Almost every song concludes at a totally different place from how it began. A track examines the fleeting nature of fame over a featherlight orchestration before collapsing into electronic cacophony. Elsewhere, a song echoing the artist's earlier trap-infused work begins off moody and brooding, featuring prowling vocals, until fluttering flamenco handclaps and an angelic chorus arrive to soften the song's jagged edges.

The Bridge Between Experiment & Pop

Another crucial balancing act of the album is straddling the gap of bold experimentation and broad appeal. It is no coincidence that the album has become her highest-charting release to crack the upper reaches of major charts: its heart contains a collection of truly catchy pop songs. A song performed primarily in the English language builds around a refrain that feels to gather more and more nagging hooks as it spins skyward. This trick gets echoed on another powerful track that grows and contracts, intertwining multiple melodies like a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like song charms with its jaunty, Disney-adjacent flair and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with cultural honesty of contemporary heartbreak anthems, eviscerating a former partner described as an "psychological terrorist".
  • Across these tracks, the vocals carry a sharp edge, akin to a fairy-tale character hiding a blade: "Gold medal in acting like a motherfucker / You've the podium of letdown."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Ears

This album represents pop on a grand scale, a hungry grasp for high artistry in an era of looming artificial sameness. It eschews self-absorption in favor of glorious elevation, crafting an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully manages its own inherent excess. It is an abundant well of hidden treasure that requires patience to fully explore but never seem like a chore. While other major releases of the year felt like feasting on meal, this record is a sumptuous feast at which the characters around it, perhaps tipsy on sacred wine, flutter from discussions about ancient figures, the profound sensation of heartbreaking sadness, and common stories about hopeless partners. It is a contemporary musical from music's truly endlessly creative visionary.
