A recent study suggests that patients who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users buying these treatments must be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have stopped the jabs report a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced something activating and you become starving," described an individual.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural changes.
