Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several access tunnels providing entry to the depot... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among numerous UK service members deployed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" on IS targets in the country, after an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
